Berkeley
is famous as the birthplace of ideas. Landscape architect
Chuck McCulloch called for a decorative hand-made trellis
to arch over the walkway to the coloful patio. Bands of
Mexican pebbles were carefully edge-set by hand to outline
the sections of colored concrete. Courses of tumbled bluestone
pavers separate the colored concrete from the low stucco
wall which was colored to match the concrete. The stucco
wall is topped with terracotta tiles inset with hand-made
tiles that were worth the six-month wait.
Plants were selected to outline the curving walls with
bursts of color, dramatic foliage and spikey textures
like the perennial grasses. The wall fountain splashes
by the entrance, greeting visitors with the refreshing
sound as they walk under the arching iron trellis. The
slide-show below has close-ups or the intricate masonry.
