San
Francisco is a city with steep, narrow streets and tall
narrow homes with breathtaking property values. Many are
without side yards or direct back yard access from the
street. This existing garden could be accessed only through
the house so Dan Fix gave special attention to protecting
it as he hauled out the old rotted deck.
Lon Shapiro of San Francisco's Shapiro
Garden Company designed the lush wisteria-draped arbor
and the massed plantings of perennials with striking
foliage for year around beauty.
The old uneven brick paving was taken
up and the best brick was salvaged to be used as decorative
bands, the rest was off-hauled. To create a level base
for the new brick paving, concrete was pumped through
the house, up three flights of stairs, into the back
yard. The new bricks and stone paving were lugged up
the stairs by hand, too.
A new back fence with decorative lattice
was created and the old side fence was decorated with
matching lattice to bring visual continuity.
