This stately San Francisco mansion was in need of a garden that would compliment its weathered stone walls and plinths. Santa Barbara Landscape Architect, Sydney Baumgartner, used the existing architectural details as the inspiration for the design of this garden for a well known movie producer.
First-place winner of the 1999 California Landscape Contractors Association award for residential renovation, San Francisco landscape architect Jay Thayer replaced the sloping, weed-filled back yard of this San Francisco house with an outdoor room ideally suited for dining and entertaining.
This is an exquisite back yard in San Francisco, beautifully designed by Jay Thayer Landscape Architect and artfully carried out by our skilled craftsmen. All the tiles were hand cut to the various sizes to make up the complex patterns in the walls and paving.

Behind this antique metal gate lies a garden that was transformed by vision and expertise from a parking lot to a world class garden. We were lucky enough to team up with Davis Dalbok from Living Green and Tim O'shea from Greenworks to produce this wonderful garden for an amazing client.
The owners bought house in San Francisco and wanted the overgrown back yard to be more private and offer a simple place to entertain. We cleared the site of old plantings, removed the concrete paving and planted very tall Emerald Green Thujas around the perimeter of the yard. The paving is sand set Italian sandstone to remind the owners of their native Italy. In time the Magnolia St. Marys will grow and provide even more privacy for the backyard which is surrounded on all sides by two story houses.
