First-place
winner of the 1999 California Landscape Contractors Association
statewide award for residential renovation, this East
Bay property is in Lafayette, between Berkeley and Walnut
Creek. The engineering challenge on this sloping lot was
to hold up the swimming pool in the upper level above
the driveway. Landscape architect Chuck McCulloch wanted
the landscaping, stone work and carpentry to look generations
old.
The heavy pool is supported
with main structural walls that are clad with stone
to achieve a hand-crafted look. Our skilled crew placed
the hand-hewn steps to be stable and even but to still
look as if built many years before. The architect specified
a fence to safeguard the pool from children at play
and an arbor as a decorative rustic feature that looked
years old. Dan Fix Landscape Construction searched out
used, recycled wood in good condition for the design
that called for old unsquare wood.
One of our many skilled craftsmen carefully
cut the gray, splintery wood to fit the joints for the
arbor and the fence so it is sound, private and rustic.
This time-consuming attention to detail and our skill
with materials are qualities of Dan Fix Landscape Construction
that are prized by Bay Area architects.
